Hybrid and EV 12V battery replacement in Silicon Oasis
Every hybrid and electric car has a small 12V battery that powers its computers and locks. When it goes flat the car will not switch on, however full the main pack is. We test and replace it where the car is parked.

Hybrid and electric cars
Why a hybrid or EV with a full main battery still will not start
The large high-voltage battery drives the car, but it stays disconnected until the car's computers close its contactors. Those computers, along with the door locks, lights and screens, run on an ordinary-looking 12V battery. If that small battery is flat, nothing wakes up: no ready light, no gear selection, sometimes not even the doors. It is the most common reason a hybrid or electric car appears completely dead.

What is different
How the 12V battery in a hybrid or EV differs
It does a different job from the battery in a petrol car, and fails in a different way.
It does not crank an engine
In electric cars and full hybrids there is no conventional starter motor to turn, so the 12V battery is often smaller. It gives little warning: there is no slow crank to hear, only a car that will not switch on one morning.
It is charged by the main pack
A DC-DC converter does the job of an alternator, and only while the car is on. A hybrid or EV that sits for weeks can flatten its 12V battery even with the main pack full.
It is often inside the car
Many hybrids keep the 12V battery in the boot or under a seat. These are usually sealed AGM units with a vent tube leading outside, which must be refitted.
Some are not lead-acid
A few recent electric models use a lithium low-voltage battery that is specific to the car. We check the model and year first and tell you before dispatch if it is not a unit we carry.
The visit
How a hybrid or EV 12V battery replacement runs
The work stays on the low-voltage side from start to finish.
- 01
Send model and year
The 12V battery differs between model years, so the exact car matters. Add the building, level and bay or a live pin.
- 02
12V battery tested
Voltage and state of health are measured. If the car can be switched on, the charging voltage from the DC-DC converter is checked as well.
- 03
Battery replaced
The correct 12V unit is fitted using the manufacturer's access points, with the vent tube and any battery sensor reconnected.
- 04
Car switched on and checked
The car is brought to ready, warning messages are checked and the old battery is taken away for recycling.
Symptoms
Signs the 12V battery is failing in a hybrid or EV
The clues are quieter than in a petrol car.
| What you notice | What is likely happening | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The car will not go to ready and the dash is dark or flickering | The 12V battery is too low to wake the control units. | Ask for a 12V test. Do not keep pressing the start button. |
| A low 12V battery or electrical system warning on the screen | The car has measured the battery's decline itself. | Book a replacement soon. These warnings usually come shortly before failure. |
| Doors will not unlock, or the key is not detected | There is not enough 12V power for the locks and receivers. | Use the mechanical key or the manual release described in the handbook, then call us. |
| Dead after being parked for weeks | The car was asleep and the 12V battery was not being topped up. | It may recover with a boost at the 12V jump point. Have it tested before relying on it. |
Never connect anything to the orange high-voltage cables or the main battery pack. Jump starting, testing and replacement all happen on the 12V side only, at the points the manufacturer provides.

Hybrid and EV 12V batteries: what people ask
Something else? Call +971 54 309 2008. A person answers, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Do electric cars really have a normal 12V battery?
Almost all do. It runs the computers, locks, lights and safety systems, and it has to be working before the high-voltage pack can connect.
Can a hybrid or electric car be jump started?
Its 12V battery can be boosted at the jump point the manufacturer provides, which is often under the bonnet even when the battery is in the boot. The high-voltage system must not be touched. It is a job best left to a technician.
Do you repair or replace the main high-voltage battery?
No. This service covers the 12V battery only. Work on the high-voltage pack belongs with the dealer or a hybrid specialist.
How long does the 12V battery last in a hybrid or EV?
It varies with the car and how it is used. In Dubai heat, and in cars that sit parked for long spells, expect a shorter life than the handbook suggests and test it once it is about 18 months old.
Which hybrids and EVs do you cover?
The 12V battery in common hybrids and electric cars, among them the Toyota Prius and Camry Hybrid, Tesla and BYD. Send the model and year and we confirm before the van sets off.
Hybrid or EV will not switch on?
Send the model, the year and your location. We check the 12V battery where the car is parked.
