Battery health check

A car battery test tells you whether to replace, recharge or look elsewhere

A car that is slow to start does not always need a battery. An electronic tester measures how much of its rated cranking power the battery can still deliver, and a voltage check with the engine running shows whether the alternator is recharging it. Together the two readings separate a worn-out battery from a discharged one, and from a charging fault that would ruin a new battery as well.

What gets measured

Four checks in one visit

Each one rules a possible cause in or out.

  • Battery state of health

The tester compares the cranking current the battery can deliver with the figure printed on its label. A battery can show a normal voltage and still fail this test.

  • State of charge

Resting voltage shows how full the battery is. A healthy battery that is simply low needs charging, not replacing.

  • Alternator output

Charging voltage is read at idle and again with the lights, AC and fans switched on. A weak alternator leaves a good battery flat within days.

  • Cables and parked drain

Corroded terminals, a loose clamp or a poor earth can mimic a dead battery. Where the signs point to it, the current drawn while the car is locked is checked too.

The visit

How an on-site battery test runs

No workshop booking. The tester comes to the bonnet.

  1. 01

    Tell us the symptom

Slow crank, clicking, a warning light or a car that has stood for weeks, plus the make, model and where it is parked.

  2. 02

    Battery measured

The tester is clipped to the terminals with the engine off and reads voltage, cranking performance and state of health.

  3. 03

    Charging system measured

With the engine running, alternator voltage is checked at idle and under electrical load.

  4. 04

    Plain result

You see the figures and get one of three answers: the battery is fine, it needs charging, or it needs replacing. If it is healthy, it stays in the car.

Reading the numbers

What battery voltage readings mean

Approximate figures for a 12V lead-acid battery that has rested with the engine off. AGM batteries read slightly higher when full.

Resting voltageRoughly how fullWhat it means
12.6V or moreFully chargedCharge is not the problem. If the car still struggles, state of health or the starter circuit is the question.
About 12.4VAround three-quartersNormal for a car used on short trips. A longer drive brings it up.
About 12.2VAround halfStarting becomes less certain. Find out why it is not being recharged.
12.0V or lessA quarter or lowerEffectively flat. Leaving a battery in this state damages it.
13.5V to 14.7V, engine runningChargingA typical alternator range. Cars with smart charging move outside it on purpose, so one reading is not a verdict.

Voltage alone cannot prove a battery is healthy. A worn battery can show 12.6V at rest and collapse the moment the starter asks for current, which is why a proper tester measures cranking performance as well.

Battery testing: what people ask

Something else? Call +971 54 309 2008. A person answers, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Is the battery test really free?

Yes. There is no fee for the battery and alternator check, and no obligation to buy a battery afterwards.

How often should a car battery be tested in Dubai?

Once it is about 18 months old, then before each summer and before and after any long trip away. It is also worth a test the first time the engine sounds slow to turn over.

What if the test says my battery is fine?

Then it stays in the car and we say so. About a third of the cars we test turn out not to need a new battery.

Can you tell whether it is the battery or the alternator?

Yes. The battery is tested with the engine off and the charging system with it running. A healthy battery that keeps going flat usually points to the alternator or to a drain while parked.

Can you find a drain that only happens sometimes?

A steady drain shows up in a car park test. One that comes and goes can take hours of logging, so if we see the signs we recommend a workshop diagnosis rather than guess.

Slow to start this morning?

Have the battery and alternator tested where the car is parked before it lets you down.
